How to get a trade valuation for a car

Updated 3 September 2026 · 2 min read · by DealerPricing

Search the registration on the DealerPricing dashboard and click "Get Valuations". You get trade values for poor, average and clean condition, a retail value, a part-exchange figure and an auction estimate, all derived from 680,000+ live and recently sold listings and refreshed hourly rather than monthly like CAP or Glass’s.

Step by step

  1. Search the registration on the dashboard

Enter the VRM and, if you know it, the mileage. DealerPricing decodes the exact make, model, variant, engine, gearbox and body style, then pulls every matching live listing.

  2. Click "Get Valuations"

On the Pricing tab, the Vehicle Valuation card loads trade and retail figures for that exact car and mileage.

  3. Read the trade bands

Trade Poor, Trade Average and Trade Clean give you a bid range by condition. DP Retail and the Retail forecourt figure show what the car sells for, so the gap is your gross margin before prep.

  4. Sanity-check against live stock

Scroll to the listings. If similar cars are sitting on forecourts for 60 days, price your bid below the average band even for a clean car.

Frequently asked questions

How is a trade valuation different from a retail valuation?

Trade is what a dealer pays to buy the car; retail is what it sells for on the forecourt. The difference has to cover preparation, warranty, overheads and profit, which is why trade values sit 10 to 20 percent below retail on most cars.

Why not just use CAP or Glass’s?

Guide books are compiled monthly and can be up to four weeks behind the market. DealerPricing values come from live listings and recent sold prices refreshed every hour, so a model that dropped £500 last week already shows it.

Does mileage change the valuation?

Yes. Enter the actual mileage with the registration. The valuation and the comparable listings are adjusted for it, which matters most on cars under five years old.

Can I get a trade valuation without an account?

Valuations are part of the dealer dashboard, which starts at £70 a month with 50 percent off the first month. The free MOT check and the £3.99 history check are available without an account.
