How to price a used car to sell fast

Updated 3 September 2026 · 2 min read · by DealerPricing

Price a used car by comparing it with identical live listings and recent sold prices rather than a guide value. On the DealerPricing dashboard, search the registration to see every comparable car from 11,000+ UK dealers, sorted by price, mileage or days listed, plus the median days to sell. Price at or just under the comparable average and review anything unsold after 14 days.

Step by step

  1. Search the registration on the dashboard

Enter the VRM and, if you know it, the mileage. DealerPricing decodes the exact make, model, variant, engine, gearbox and body style, then pulls every matching live listing.

  2. Compare the live listings

The results table lists every comparable car with price, mileage, days listed, dealer and distance. Sort by price to see where yours would sit; sort by days listed to spot overpriced stock that is not moving.

  3. Check the sold prices

Switch the listing type to Sold to see what similar cars actually achieved in the last 90 days, not just what others are asking.

  4. Set the price and a review date

Price at or slightly under the comparable average for your mileage. Use Avg Days to Sell from Insights as your review trigger: if it has not sold by then, reprice.

Frequently asked questions

Should I price high and reduce later?

The data says no. Cars priced above the comparable set attract fewer enquiries in the first two weeks, when a listing gets most of its views, and end up selling for less after reductions. Price to the market from day one.

How many days is too long for a used car to sit?

It depends on the model. Use the average days to sell for that exact car as the benchmark. If yours is past it with no enquiries, the price is wrong for its mileage, spec or condition.

Should I compare with cars nationally or locally?

Both. Use the distance filter to see your local competition, then remove it to check you are not out of line with the national picture, because buyers travel for the right car.

How do I account for mileage and spec differences?

Filter to a mileage band around your car, then use the spec check to confirm which listings have the same options. A car with the wrong gearbox or missing a pack is not a true comparable.
