Is Vauxhall’s Heritage the Key to Its Future Success?
Vauxhall’s commercial director explains how heritage, simplicity and a multi‑energy range will drive the brand forward amid market disruption.
Vauxhall’s Position in a Disruptive Automotive Landscape
Vauxhall has reaffirmed its ambition to remain a “great mainstream value brand” at a time the UK car market is experiencing what Michael Auliar, the brand’s commercial director, describes as “the biggest period of disruption in the last 120 years”. This disruption is characterised by rapid shifts in consumer expectations, the rise of new entrants and a clear move towards electrified powertrains.

Leaning Into Heritage
Having spent 27 years at Nissan UK in a variety of roles, Auliar joined Vauxhall in December of the previous year. He instantly began “leaning back into our heritage”, reminding the team that Vauxhall builds cars for everyone. The director warned that the worst scenario for any brand is when consumers feel indifferent – “the worst thing is when [consumers] don’t feel anything about your brand”. By re‑emphasising its mainstream roots, Vauxhall hopes to rekindle a strong emotional connection.
Competing on Value, Not Just Price
With an influx of Chinese manufacturers targeting the value‑focused end of the market, Vauxhall is careful not to chase the lowest price tag. Auliar noted, “I don’t always want to be the cheapest.” Instead, the brand aims to be competitive by offering simplicity for consumers – a principle he described as “really, really important”. This focus on straightforward purchasing and ownership experiences is intended to differentiate Vauxhall from both legacy rivals and emerging price‑driven players.
Scale, Synergy and Stellantis Support
Operating under the broader Stellantis group provides Vauxhall with the economies of scale needed in today’s competitive environment. Auliar remarked that “I can’t see in this competitive market how a standalone brand can survive”, underscoring the importance of shared resources and platform efficiencies, especially as Chinese brands reshape the market dynamics.
A Multi‑Energy Portfolio for Every Driver
Vauxhall currently offers a “multi‑energy approach”, delivering petrol, hybrid and electric variants across almost every model in its line‑up. The commercial director stressed that there is “not a one size fits all solution” when it comes to powertrain choice. Honesty with customers is central – if an electric vehicle (EV) does not meet a driver’s needs, Vauxhall will acknowledge that, rather than pushing a product that may be returned within months.
This pragmatic stance recognises that EVs, while essential to the brand’s future, are not yet a perfect fit for every buyer. By offering a breadth of options, Vauxhall aims to match the right technology to the right driver, reinforcing its mainstream appeal.
What This Means for Dealers and Buyers
For dealers, Vauxhall’s clarified strategy translates into a clear sales narrative: promote the brand’s heritage, highlight simple ownership benefits and match the appropriate powertrain to each customer’s lifestyle. For buyers, the message is equally straightforward – Vauxhall seeks to provide value‑driven, reliable transportation without forcing a one‑size‑fits‑all solution.
As the automotive sector continues to evolve, Vauxhall’s commitment to remembering “what we are” – a great mainstream value brand – could be the cornerstone of its future growth.
