How Did Lloyd Motor Group Grow From a Single BMW Dealership to a 50‑Year Multi‑Brand Group?

Lloyd Motor Group marks 50 years, evolving from a Cockermouth BMW showroom to a multi‑brand dealer network across northern England.

A Half‑Century of Growth

In August 2026 Lloyd Motor Group celebrates fifty years of automotive retailing. The family‑run business began on 4 August 1976 when R. Lloyd Motors Ltd opened a single BMW showroom on Derwent Street in Cockermouth, Cumbria. The original site still forms part of the group’s network today.

From BMW to a Multi‑Brand Portfolio

Within a year the franchise portfolio expanded to include Volvo, signalling the company’s ambition to represent more manufacturers. The 1980s saw the addition of a second BMW dealership in Carlisle, while the 1990s introduced Land Rover to the range.

During the 2000s Lloyd Motor Group broadened its footprint with Jaguar, BMW and Mini outlets across Cumbria, Newcastle and Lancashire. The following decade added Jaguar Land Rover locations in Ripon and Kelso, a Blackpool BMW store, the Lloyd Used Car Centre in Carlisle and the first Kia franchise.

More recent years have brought INEOS, Volkswagen, Škoda, BYD and Geely to the group’s brand armory, alongside new sites in York and the North East, cementing its status as one of the UK’s largest privately owned dealer groups.

Geographic Expansion Across the North

Today the group operates across Cumbria, Lancashire, the North East, North Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders. Its current brand lineup includes BMW, Mini, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Škoda, Volvo, Kia, INEOS, BYD and Geely – a diverse portfolio that reflects the changing preferences of northern UK motorists.

Celebrating the Milestone

Managing Director Sam Lloyd marked the anniversary by highlighting the values that have underpinned the business: “50 years is a significant milestone, and one we mark with a great deal of humility. This business was built on trust, hard work and long‑term relationships, and that hasn’t changed since the day we opened our doors in Cockermouth in 1976.” He added that the loyalty of customers, the dedication of colleagues and support from local communities have driven every achievement.

To commemorate the occasion the group has launched a series of community initiatives, charitable activities and a dedicated 50th‑anniversary website featuring customer stories, employee spotlights and reflections from senior leaders.

Looking Ahead to the Next Fifty Years

While proud of its history, Lloyd Motor Group is equally focused on future growth. The statement from Sam Lloyd – “We’re proud of our history, but we’re just as focused on the next fifty years as we are on the last” – encapsulates the forward‑looking strategy that will guide the group's expansion into emerging vehicle technologies and new market segments.
