How early can I get an MOT without losing days?
You can have the test up to one month (minus a day) before the current certificate expires and the new certificate keeps the original expiry date, so you lose nothing.
What happens if my MOT has expired?
You cannot legally drive the car except to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs found at a test. Driving without an MOT risks a fine of up to £1,000 and invalidates most insurance.
Does a new car need an MOT?
No. Cars need their first MOT three years after first registration. The free check shows the "First Registered" date so you can work out when the first test is due.
Can I get a reminder before my MOT is due?
The DVSA offers a free reminder service by email or text. Use the free check to confirm your expiry date first, then set the reminder.
