Why Do One in Five UK Drivers Miss MOT, Tax or Insurance Deadlines?
One in five UK motorists forget MOT, tax or insurance dates – discover the reasons and how apps can help you stay on track.
Key findings: one in five drivers miss essential car admin
Recent research shows that 21% of UK drivers have forgotten to renew their MOT, vehicle tax or car insurance on time. Missing these deadlines can lead to penalties, higher costs and unexpected stress for motorists.
How difficult is car administration for drivers?
The study, commissioned by Lloyds and carried out by YouGov in May, surveyed more than 2,000 people across the United Kingdom. Overall, 42% of respondents said they find managing car administration difficult. The challenge is most pronounced among younger drivers – 59% of 25‑ to 34‑year‑olds reported struggling with the paperwork and reminders.
Financial impact of missed deadlines
For those who have slipped up, the consequences are tangible. More than one in ten – 11% of the total sample – indicated that they faced additional fees or higher costs as a direct result of missing an MOT, tax or insurance renewal.
What can help motorists stay on schedule?
In response to the findings, Lloyds introduced a new feature within its mobile banking app called “Manage Your Car”. This tool consolidates reminders for MOTs, servicing, insurance renewals and other key dates, providing prompts to act before a deadline is breached. The feature is available to all Lloyds customers, regardless of the finance provider they use.

Nick Williams, Managing Director of Transport at Lloyds, explained that “juggling multiple apps, deadlines and rising costs means things can slip through the cracks for people trying to stay on top of their car admin.” By centralising alerts in a single platform, the bank aims to reduce the risk of missed deadlines and the associated unexpected expenses.
Other apps on the market
The RAC highlighted its own solution – the myRAC app – which already boasts four million users. Simon Williams, Head of Policy at the RAC, noted that the app is open to anyone, not just RAC members, offering another avenue for drivers to track their vehicle paperwork.
These examples demonstrate a growing trend: technology is increasingly being used to simplify vehicle administration, a sector traditionally viewed as cumbersome.
What does this mean for UK drivers?
With a fifth of motorists missing critical dates, the data suggests a clear need for better reminder systems. Whether through banking apps, motoring club services or dedicated vehicle‑management platforms, drivers now have several digital options to help stay compliant and avoid costly penalties.
Takeaway for dealers and finance providers
For car dealers and finance organisations, promoting these admin‑management tools can enhance customer satisfaction and reduce the likelihood of repossession or loan defaults triggered by missed tax or insurance payments. Embedding reminders into the post‑sale communication strategy could become a differentiator in a competitive market.
