Industry veteran steps down after almost five decades

A respected figure in the motor trade is retiring this week after a career spanning almost 50 years.

Graham Clark, the founder of Anderson Clark Motor Repairs in Inverness, announced that he will be handing over the reins after more than three decades of running the independent garage. He described the decision as the right moment to “hang up the tools” and enjoy a well‑earned retirement.

From humble beginnings to a trusted local name

Clark co‑founded Anderson Clark Motor Repairs with the late David Anderson in 1996. The original ambition was straightforward: “to build a business customers could trust”. Over the years the workshop has processed thousands of vehicles, forged lasting friendships and serviced multiple generations of families across the Highlands.

Reflecting on the journey, Clark said, “It feels strange to say that after a lifetime surrounded by cars, colleagues and customers, but it also feels like the right moment to take a breath and look back on what’s been an incredible journey.” He added that he never imagined how far the business would grow or how rewarding the experience would become.

Tributes from staff, customers and the new leadership team

Clark took the opportunity to thank every member of the Anderson Clark team, past and present, describing them as “hard‑working, skilled, loyal and always dedicated”. He also expressed gratitude to customers, many of whom have been with the garage since its opening day, for their trust and loyalty.

Following last year’s transition to employee ownership – a move that saw the staff establish a trust to take control of the business – the workshop is now led by managing director Neil Johnstone. Johnstone praised Clark as a “guiding figure” who helped shape the garage into the successful operation it is today and noted that Clark is highly respected both locally and throughout the wider motor industry.

Looking ahead: confidence in a new chapter

Clark stated that he leaves the business confident it will continue to thrive while preserving the values that underpin its reputation. He admitted that he will miss the daily buzz of the workshop, the banter among colleagues and the satisfaction of a job well done, but looks forward to “more family time, travel and maybe tinkering with cars just for fun”.
