Can donated cars accelerate a student’s path into the motor trade?

Snows Motor Group supports automotive education at St Edward’s School

Snows Motor Group, a Hampshire‑based dealer network with around 50 sites across the south and south‑west, has donated two part‑exchange vehicles to St Edward’s School in Sherfield English. The contribution is aimed at students who are considering a career in the motor trade and need practical, hands‑on training.

A new workshop creates a real‑world learning environment

St Edward’s, a school that provides care and education for boys facing social, emotional and mental‑health challenges, recently opened a state‑of‑the‑art automotive workshop on its campus. The facility is run by two fully qualified mechanics, Shaun Nicholson and Ben Allen, who also teach in the school’s Practical Skills Centre. The workshop gives pupils the chance to work on real vehicles, develop repair skills and earn industry‑recognised qualifications.

Two part‑exchange cars become essential teaching tools

The donated cars – a Volkswagen Passat and a Toyota Yaris – arrived at the school after being traded in by Snows customers who upgraded to newer models. Although the vehicles are no longer brand‑new, they provide an ideal platform for students to practice maintenance, diagnostics and bodywork techniques. “Our students need to work on as many different models as possible, and from a variety of manufacturers,” explained Shaun Nicholson. The variety helps learners become adaptable, a quality highly valued by future employers.

Linking classroom learning to industry pathways

Students at St Edward’s work towards an Award in Motor Vehicle Studies, awarded by the Skills and Education Group. This qualification is the first step on a route that can lead to an apprenticeship or further study in automotive engineering. “We aim to give our students the confidence, familiarity and foundational skills they need to progress once they have left us, with employment in the motor industry the ultimate goal,” said Nicholson.

Snows supports that goal by offering a range of apprenticeships and training courses. General Manager Nick Humphries highlighted the mutual benefit: “It’s great to encourage young people who are thinking about a career in the motor trade to get involved as early as possible. Anyone who comes to us with some prior automotive experience will always stand a good chance of being given an opportunity.”

Community partnership and future collaboration

The hand‑over ceremony was conducted by Nick Humphries, General Manager for Snows BYD, and Dean Walker, Aftersales Manager at the Snows Used Car Centre in Millbrook, Southampton. Both men praised the new workshop and the dedication of teachers Shaun and Ben. The partnership is expected to continue, with Snows hoping to provide further resources and possibly future vehicle donations as the school’s programme expands.

By turning part‑exchange cars into educational assets, Snows demonstrates how dealership networks can play a direct role in nurturing the next generation of skilled motor‑trade professionals.
