While this vehicle maintains the visual spirit of the original Morris Minor, underneath lies a completely transformed machine. The concept wasn't to restore a Minor back to factory specification but rather to reinterpret the car through the lens of a 1970s hot rod, executed with modern engineering standards, finish quality and everyday usability. The owner, a dedicated Morris Minor enthusiast with particular affection for the custom Minors popular in the 1970s, wanted a car that captured that period vibe but with proper performance, usable road manners and contemporary comforts.

How Retro Power Reimagined the Classic Bodywork

Widened Steel Arches and Handcrafted Rear Wings

The bodywork immediately signals this isn't a standard restoration. While the overall silhouette remains loyal to the Morris Minor shape, the proportions have been significantly enhanced. To accommodate the wider MX-5-based running gear and achieve the desired stance, the car was widened by nearly 100mm per arch, both front and rear. The front wings were reworked from the swage line outward using foam modelling to develop the shape before final steel sections were fabricated and grafted into the original panels. The backbone section linking the gearbox and differential remains part of the Mazda architecture, helping the drivetrain behave as one assembly and giving the car a direct, immediate feel under load. Remarkably, the build achieved almost perfect 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution, with the finished kerb weight sitting at almost exactly one ton – an impressive result for something maintaining this compact, traditional appearance.

Ford Zetec Power and Modern Engineering

Why the Zetec Engine Was Chosen

Despite the Mazda hardware underneath, Retro Power opted for a 2.0-litre Ford Zetec engine. The Zetec was selected for its compact dimensions, reliability, proven track record and ability to deliver appropriate power without creating packaging complications. Built by ProDev, the engine runs OMEX throttle bodies with an OMEX ECU, providing a crisp, responsive naturally aspirated setup that perfectly suits the rest of the package. Output is approximately 200bhp, which in a one-ton classic-looking shell with modern chassis hardware delivers genuinely exciting performance.

Simpson Race Exhausts and Clever Packaging Solutions

The exhaust manifold and system were crafted by Simpson Race Exhausts, addressing the challenge of tight packaging within the small-bodied car while maintaining a neat appearance. The system uses a long round silencer under the car and a transverse rear box with twin exits, keeping the car civilised enough for road use while delivering an appropriately special sound. This attention to packaging excellence runs throughout the entire build, with every component carefully considered for optimal placement and function.

Modern Interior With Classic Charm

MX-5 Seats and Improved Driving Position

The interior demonstrates where this build truly shines. Rather than preserving the original Minor's upright driving position and limited practicality, Retro Power optimised the cabin for modern comfort and usability. The elimination of rear seats allowed the driving position to be moved further back and lower down, creating a far more natural and comfortable environment. MX-5 seats were selected specifically because they fit perfectly within the compact interior dimensions.

Contemporary Comforts and Technology

The modern usability aspect comes alive with proper electronic air conditioning, Bluetooth audio, cup holders, a cordless phone charger and a digital rear-view mirror with camera feed from the back of the vehicle. This latter feature is particularly clever, as it provides an uncompromised rear view unaffected by the cabin structure, with an additional camera view activating when reverse is selected. The technology is implemented purposefully – not merely for novelty but to genuinely enhance the ownership experience.

One of the build's standout features is the forward-hinging bonnet, necessitated by the revised components behind the bulkhead. Retro Power designed its own hinge system using E30 bonnet struts for support, creating both functional and visual appeal. Beautifully machined billet reservoirs and a uniquely shaped radiator that follows the bonnet line for optimal cooling system placement demonstrate the engineering excellence throughout.

For a project of this complexity, Retro Power completed the build in approximately two years – remarkably quick considering the extensive modifications involved.
