Mercedes appoints former Smart CEO Jason Allbutt as its new UK sales director. Plus, meet Louise O'Sullivan, the new CEO of Smart UK.
Mercedes Welcomes Back Jason Allbutt as New UK Sales Director
In a significant leadership shuffle within the UK automotive sector, Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed the appointment of Jason Allbutt as its new UK sales director. This marks a return to familiar ground for Allbutt, who previously enjoyed a long and successful career with the prestigious German marque.
A Homecoming for an Industry Veteran
Jason Allbutt's automotive career is deeply rooted at Mercedes, having first joined the company back in 1995. Over the years, he ascended through the ranks, gaining invaluable experience in several key senior management positions. His expertise spans critical areas including finance, sales, product strategy, and planning, making him a well-rounded and strategic leader.
His departure from Mercedes in 2024 was to take on the top role of Chief Executive Officer at Smart. However, his tenure there was short-lived, as he is now set to return to his former employer. From February 1st, Allbutt will be responsible for overseeing the entire Mercedes dealer network in the UK, a position of considerable influence within one of the country's leading premium car brands.
Building on Past Success and Forging New Partnerships
Allbutt is no stranger to the challenges and opportunities facing Mercedes. He was a pivotal figure in the implementation of the brand's agency sales model in 2023, a significant shift in how new cars are sold. In his new role, he has pledged to work closely with the brand's retail partners, indicating a continued focus on strengthening the relationship between the manufacturer and its dealer network.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Allbutt said: "It is truly exciting to return to the brand where I began my career, especially as we celebrate 140 years of innovation. I am looking forward to working closely with the whole team, and our network partners, to drive sales of our incredible product line-up and build on our position in the market."
Smart Appoints Louise O'Sullivan as New CEO
Following Allbutt's departure, Smart has moved swiftly to appoint his successor. The brand has confirmed that Louise O’Sullivan will take the helm as the new CEO of Smart UK. O'Sullivan brings a wealth of experience from the automotive finance and manufacturing sectors, having most recently served as Deputy Managing Director and Commercial Director at Volvo Car Financial Services UK.

Her career also includes a significant tenure at Renault Group UK, where she held executive positions including Marketing Director and Network Operations Director. This broad background positions her well to lead Smart during a period of exciting product expansion.
Commenting on her appointment, O'Sullivan said: "I am delighted to be joining smart at such an exciting time. The brand is going from strength to strength, with an award-winning model range – including the #5’s recent crowning as What Car?’s Family Electric SUV of the Year – and the upcoming introduction of the new #2. I look forward to leading the company’s continued growth in the UK over the years to come."
These executive changes highlight the dynamic nature of the UK car industry and underscore the strategic importance both Mercedes and Smart place on strong, experienced leadership to navigate the evolving market, particularly in the rapidly growing electric vehicle segment.
