Is The Mk1 Escort RSR The Ultimate EcoBoost-Powered Track Weapon?
Discover the Ford Escort Mk1 RSR race car: a 900kg, spaceframed track weapon with 400bhp from a Mustang EcoBoost engine. Built by SHP Engineering.
For fans of British motorsport heritage blended with modern performance, the Ford Escort Mk1 RSR featured on 'Build Masters' represents a compelling fusion of old and new. Far from being a static show car, this machine is a fully-developed competition vehicle built by SHP Engineering and driven by John, the father of builder Ash. It stands as a testament to how classic British motoring can be transformed into a cutting-edge race weapon.

Race Pedigree and a Family Legacy
The project is steeped in racing heritage, with driver John having a background competing in Mk1 Escorts, Mk2 variants, and Toyota Starlets during his earlier career. This new build is therefore more than just a car; it's a continuation of a family passion for motorsport, bringing decades of experience back to the track with a thoroughly modernised package.
Modern Mustang Power in a Classic Shell
The heart of this lightweight racer is a standard 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost engine, sourced directly from a Ford Mustang. In a car weighing just 900kg, the output of 400bhp and 520lb/ft of torque delivers a power-to-weight ratio that is nothing short of phenomenal. This potent engine is mated to a French Sadev 6-speed sequential gearbox, chosen for its compact dimensions, light weight, and brutal effectiveness on a racetrack.
The choice of the EcoBoost unit was a deliberate one, prioritising strength, affordability, and proven reliability. With a new crate engine costing approximately £4,500, it presents a pragmatic alternative for racers seeking serious performance without the premium cost associated with engines from specialists like Millington or Smith & Jones.
Built to Race, Engineered to Win
The Escort RSR is constructed around a purpose-designed spaceframe chassis, cloaked in a full fibreglass body to minimise weight. Inside, the cabin is pure race-specification, featuring a Tillett seat, electronic power steering, and dual-sensor setups for monitoring temperature and pressure to ensure reliability under extreme conditions.

The car is a continuous development project. After initial test runs highlighted issues with heat soak, the team implemented aerodynamic tweaks, upgraded the intercooling system, and made adjustments to the airflow. This proactive approach underscores the car's serious intent as a competitive racing machine.
Proven Track Performance
Despite being a new build in 2025, the car has already proven its capabilities by securing a trophy at the Retro Rides Gathering. With ongoing testing and refinement by John, Ash, and the rest of the family team, this Mk1 Escort RSR is clearly being honed for significant success on the UK club racing circuit.

Mk2 Escort Harrier
Ash's own Mk2 Escort Harrier is the result of an eight-year build process. It features a 198bhp crossflow engine and is packed with intricate details, representing a perfect blend of show car aesthetics and performance.
Toyota Starlet KP61
Another standout is the Toyota Starlet KP61, a retro weapon powered by a Volkswagen engine producing 220bhp. This car is engineered to be as sharp and competitive on the track as it is striking on the showstand.
These builds collectively showcase a deep commitment to the UK car scene, blending classic styling with modern engineering to create truly exceptional performance vehicles.
