Do UK Car Buyers Really Care Where Their Car Is Made? New Survey Reveals Top Priority
What Car? survey shows 80% of UK buyers prioritise vehicle quality over its country of origin. Find out which British-built cars are leading the way.
Quality Trumps Origin for UK Car Buyers
UK car buyers are placing the quality and reliability of their next car well above any concerns about where it was manufactured, according to new research. A significant survey of 1,000 in-market buyers by What Car? highlights a pragmatic approach to vehicle purchasing, with an overwhelming 80% of respondents stating that how well a car is made is their primary consideration, regardless of its country of origin.

Electric Vehicle Buyers Show a Slightly Stronger Preference for British
The research revealed a subtle distinction between different types of buyers. Electric vehicle (EV) owners were slightly more inclined to consider a British-built car, with 17% expressing this preference compared to just 14% of petrol or diesel car buyers. Despite this difference, the overall message is clear: build quality is the dominant factor in the decision-making process for the vast majority.
Financial Incentives Fail to Sway Most Consumers
The study also explored whether a financial incentive could persuade buyers to choose a British model. The results suggest this would have limited impact. Only 14% of EV buyers and a mere 9% of those purchasing an internal combustion engine car said that an incentive would convince them to 'Buy British'. This reinforces the idea that perceived long-term value and reliability outweigh short-term financial gains for most consumers.
What Car? Issues a Wake-Up Call to British Manufacturers
What Car? has interpreted these findings as a clear message for UK-based manufacturers: the focus must remain firmly on producing robust and reliable vehicles above all else. The publication noted that some British-built models are already well-regarded for their quality. The previous-generation Nissan Leaf, for example, was a standout performer, achieving a 96.5% rating and ranking as the third-most reliable EV in the What Car? Reliability Survey.
Mini, another brand with significant UK manufacturing presence, also boasts a strong track record, having been rated the second-highest car brand overall for reliability. Furthermore, the 2014-2024 Mini hatchback model was named the third-highest rated small car.
Room for Improvement: A Look at Land Rover
The survey also highlighted areas where British brands can improve. As a brand, Land Rover was ranked 26th out of 30 manufacturers in the reliability survey. However, there were bright spots for the marque, with the Range Rover Sport (2014-2022) named the second-best performing luxury vehicle and the Defender ranking as the fourth-best seven-seater.
Expert Opinion: Quality is Non-Negotiable
Claire Evans, Consumer Editor at What Car?, summarised the findings: 'The fact that car buyers value quality over where a car is made means UK car producers need to ensure their vehicles are robust and reliable. This is something Nissan did with the previous Leaf, but Land Rover needs to build on its recent progress when it introduces its own pure electric models, starting with the Range Rover Electric later this year.'
For UK car buyers, the message is unambiguous. When choosing your next new car, the fundamental question isn't about the flag on the factory, but the substance behind the badge.
