His Renault 5 Turbo is far from a static showpiece; it represents a living, breathing custom build that has been meticulously developed for a quarter of a century. With a formidable 263bhp and an unwavering focus on bespoke details, this vehicle continues to capture attention.

From Derelict Shed to Modified Icon

The story of this car began with it languishing forgotten in an outbuilding. Its revival started simply, with Dicky fitting a fresh spark plug and embarking on a transformation journey that commenced in the early 2000s. This continuous evolution has been well-documented, with the car first being featured in Fast Car magazine back in 2004 and again in 2006. Since then, it has secured its status as a standout example within the Renault 5 modified community.

A Bespoke Exterior

Dicky ensured this build was unique from the very start. While a full Charisma body kit serves as the foundation, virtually every panel has been personally customised. The modifications include shaved indicators, a 'bad boy' bonnet, and hand-fabricated mirrors. The car features distinctive motorbike-style twin exhausts, housed within a completely one-off rear bumper crafted specifically for this purpose. Further exterior touches include a Maestro spoiler, a smoothed bonnet, and a set of rare tail lights that cost around £700, culminating in a design that perfectly encapsulates 2000s modding culture, refreshed for a modern audience.

Serious Performance Under the Bonnet

The impressive appearance is matched by serious performance. The 1.4-litre engine, built by B&B Tuning, delivers an impressive 263bhp. This power is achieved through a T3 turbo, lightened internal components, ported manifolds, a charge cooler, and a multipoint injection system. Remarkably, this high-performance engine has been running reliably for over 15 years without needing a rebuild, a testament to the quality of the original tuning work.

An Interior Blending Retro and Refresh

Inside the cabin, the theme of customisation continues with blue accents and polished details. A full custom audio installation complements the new FK seats, which perfectly match the car's original trim pattern. The roof lining and interior panels were re-covered to coordinate, while a fresh steering wheel and classic boss setup maintain a sense of practicality while staying true to the vehicle's roots.

A Living Project, Still Driven

This is not a trailer queen. Dicky continues to drive and regularly modify his creation. The car's aesthetic is in a constant state of evolution; it currently sports a bold black-and-white theme, but Dicky retains chrome wheels and other bumpers and spoilers in storage, ready for the next transformation. This Renault 5 is more than just a custom build; it is a rolling time capsule of dedicated UK car culture.
