Amazon Autos UK Launch for 2026: Will It Rival Autotrader?
Amazon Autos is reportedly set to launch in the UK by 2026, creating direct competition with Autotrader and Motorway. Discover what this means for dealers and buyers.
Amazon's Automotive Ambition: A New UK Rival for Autotrader
The UK's online car marketplace is set for a seismic shift with the anticipated arrival of Amazon Autos. According to sources speaking to Car Dealer, the e-commerce giant is actively preparing to launch its automotive platform in the UK by the end of 2026. This move would position Amazon as a direct competitor to established players like Autotrader, fundamentally changing the landscape for both car dealers and consumers.
UK Launch Imminent as Amazon Lines Up Partners
Reports indicate that Amazon is already in advanced stages of planning its UK entry. Suppliers are being lined up to support the launch, with the ambitious target of advertising dealers' cars before the end of this year. The UK is understood to be the first of five European markets targeted for Amazon Autos' international expansion, highlighting the strategic importance of the British automotive sector.
Confirmation of the company's interest came directly from Amazon Autos director Steve Johnson. Speaking exclusively to Car Dealer at the NADA conference in Las Vegas, Johnson stated that a UK launch was a case of 'not if, but when'. However, he tempered expectations by noting the company's primary focus remains on the US market, acknowledging the 'complex laws and regulations' present in the UK.
How Amazon Autos Will Operate in the UK
The proposed platform is expected to mirror its successful US operation. Consumers will be able to browse and select new or used cars, obtain finance quotes, and add extras like warranties directly on the Amazon site. The platform will then hand over the fully prepared customer and deal to the participating dealer. This functionality is similar to Autotrader's existing Deal Builder product, setting the stage for intense competition for dealers' marketing budgets.
Meetings with UK trade partners have already taken place as Amazon works to establish how to offer key services such as finance and warranties to its customers. A significant part of the appeal for dealers is Amazon's stated business model. In the US, the company offers free advertising and does not take a cut of vehicle sales. Steve Johnson confirmed, 'We are not participating in front-end gross or taking a revenue share on vehicle sales. Our business model is built around advertising.'

Beyond Selling: A Potential Rival to Motorway and Carwow
Amazon's ambitions extend beyond simply selling cars. The platform is also likely to launch a service that rivals car-selling marketplaces like Motorway and Carwow. In Los Angeles, consumers can already use Amazon to offer their cars directly to dealers, a feature launched in response to dealer feedback highlighting used car stock acquisition as a major pain point. Johnson confirmed this feature is under evaluation for international expansion.
A key differentiator for dealers is the level of control they retain. Johnson was keen to emphasise that 'Dealers control pricing, inventory, deal structure, F&I rates, and markups – just like other independent sellers on Amazon control their products and pricing.' This dealer-centric approach could prove attractive in a competitive market.
The Established US Model: What to Expect
To understand the potential UK offering, it's useful to look at the current US operation. Amazon Autos there sells new cars from manufacturers including Hyundai, Mazda, Subaru, Ford, and Kia, with more brands being added regularly. Used cars are available for purchase in 130 US cities, with a rapid rollout continuing across the country. The service launched in the States 13 months ago and is currently waiving subscription fees for dealers to help grow the marketplace, though this may not be a permanent arrangement.

As the 2026 target approaches, the UK automotive industry will be watching closely. The entry of a global titan like Amazon has the potential to reshape how cars are bought and sold, offering new opportunities for dealers and a fresh experience for consumers. For now, the question remains not if, but exactly when, Amazon will park its Autos platform on British shores.
