Developer API Terms of Use
Last updated: 24 October 2026
1. About these terms
These terms govern developer accounts, API keys (live and sandbox), the API documentation and the data returned by the DealerPricing API (the API). They are a contract between DealerPricing (we, us) and the business that opens a developer account (you). By creating a developer account, generating an API key or calling the API you agree to them.
The API is offered to businesses only. Our website Terms of Service govern the DealerPricing dashboard and subscriptions; where the two overlap in relation to the API, these terms prevail. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your account data.
2. Definitions
- Results - any data, values, flags, records or documents the API returns, in any form.
- Provenance Data - Results describing a vehicle's history or status that come from restricted registers: outstanding finance, stolen markers, insurance write-off records, mileage anomalies, scrappage, keeper counts, plate and colour changes, and similar markers.
- Public Data - Results derived from open public sources such as DVLA vehicle tax status and DVSA MOT history.
- Market Data - Results describing vehicles offered for sale or sold, and insights derived from them.
- Your Application - the software, website, app or internal system that you operate and that calls the API.
- End User - a person or business who uses Your Application or receives output from it.
- Report - a document or record you produce for a specific End User and a specific vehicle transaction or enquiry that incorporates Results.
- Reseller Use - supplying Reports that incorporate Results to your own customers for a fee or as part of your product, including under your own brand (white-labelling). Reseller Use is permitted on the conditions in clause 12.
- Sandbox - API keys and data provided for development and testing only.
3. Your account and API keys
- You must give accurate business details, including a named contact and phone number, and keep them current. One developer account per business unless we agree otherwise.
- API keys are confidential. Keep them server-side, never in client-side code or public repositories, and never share them. You are responsible for every request made with your keys, whether or not you authorised it, until you revoke the key or tell us it is compromised.
- Live keys require a verified email address. We may ask you to verify your identity or business before or after issuing live keys, and may decline or withdraw access where we cannot verify you.
4. Licence
Subject to these terms and payment of the applicable fees, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable, worldwide licence to call the API and to use Results within Your Application for your business purposes, including displaying Results to your End Users, incorporating Results into Reports, and Reseller Use on the conditions in clause 12.
The licence covers Results as delivered inside Your Application and your Reports. It does not allow you to pass the API itself, or Results as raw data, on to anyone else: the restrictions in clause 5 apply to every use, resold or not.
5. Restrictions
You must not, and must not allow anyone else to:
- provide Results as, or build from them, a lookup service, index, database, dataset, flat file, feed or bulk export - a Report for a specific End User and vehicle is permitted; an API, a data feed or a downloadable dataset built from Results is not;
- sub-license, sell or share your API access or keys, or act as an intermediary through which other businesses call the API;
- systematically collect Results, or combine Results over time, to build or supplement a vehicle database, a valuation model, a pricing tool, or any dataset that could substitute for the API;
- use Results to train, fine-tune, evaluate or improve any machine-learning or artificial-intelligence model, or to create derived training data, embeddings or synthetic datasets;
- use Results to identify, locate, trace or contact a vehicle's keeper, owner or driver, or combine Results with other data for that purpose;
- display a vehicle's full VIN or chassis number to a consumer where you obtained it from a registration-number lookup; you may show a partial VIN or use the VIN for verification;
- use any data supplier's or public body's name, mark or logo in connection with Results, or imply that a data supplier or public body has endorsed Your Application;
- remove or obscure any notice, disclaimer, attribution or request identifier that the API returns;
- exceed the rate limits or usage caps of your keys, share keys between businesses, or work around limits with multiple accounts;
- reverse-engineer, scrape, crawl or probe the API or our systems, or interfere with their operation or security;
- use the API or Results for any unlawful purpose, or in a way that breaches the rights of any person.
6. Caching, retention and refreshing data
- Short-term caching. You may cache Results within Your Application for up to 24 hours to serve repeat requests for the same vehicle from the same End User.
- Provenance Data is point-in-time. Request it afresh for each new check, enquiry or transaction. Do not cache it beyond the check it was obtained for, and never reuse it for another End User or another transaction.
- Completed Reports may be kept. Results incorporated into a Report for a specific End User and transaction may be retained as part of that Report for as long as you need that record, provided the Report is not re-served to other End Users, re-sold, aggregated or mined. A new transaction, or the same vehicle for a different End User, needs a new request.
- Market Data may only be persisted inside a completed Report; do not store listings or insights as a dataset.
- On termination delete cached Results within 30 days. Completed Reports already delivered to End Users may be kept.
7. Data sources, accuracy and reliance
Results are compiled from third-party data suppliers and public bodies, including the DVLA and DVSA, and reflect the information available to those sources at the moment of the request. Registers can be incomplete, delayed or wrong; a vehicle can be free of markers today and recorded tomorrow. Valuations and insights are estimates. Results are provided for information only, are not a substitute for a physical inspection, a documented history or professional advice, and must not be the sole basis for a decision to buy, sell, finance or insure a vehicle.
Where you show Results to End Users you must show a clear statement to that effect. MOT history contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0; if you display it, keep that attribution.
8. Data protection
- Registration numbers, VINs and vehicle histories can be personal data where they can be linked to an individual. Each of us is an independent controller of the personal data we process; neither of us processes it on the other's behalf.
- You must have a lawful basis for every request you make and for what you do with the Results, use them only for legitimate vehicle-related purposes, and comply with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 or, where you are outside the UK, your equivalent law.
- You are responsible for any transfer of personal data from the UK to another country, including putting in place any safeguard the law requires, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement.
- Keep Results secure, limit them to the people who need them, and tell us without undue delay of any security incident that affects Results or your keys.
- Our Privacy Policy explains how we process your account and usage data. We log requests, including the vehicle identifier, for billing, security and abuse prevention.
9. Territory and compliance with law
- The API covers vehicles registered in the United Kingdom. You may use it from outside the UK unless the law of your country or ours prohibits it.
- You are responsible for compliance with the laws that apply to you and to your End Users, including consumer protection, advertising, data protection, tax and licensing law in every territory in which you operate.
- You confirm that you, your owners and your End-User markets are not subject to UK, EU, UN or US sanctions, and you will not supply Results into a sanctioned territory or to a sanctioned person.
- Our data suppliers may restrict the territories or purposes for which particular Results may be used. We may impose such restrictions on you by notice, and they apply equally to Reseller Use.
10. Fees and payment
- Prices are published on the pricing page and depend on your package. Requests are paid at the price current when the request is made, first from any plan credit and then from your pre-paid balance.
- Plan credit. Each monthly package fee you pay (and the price difference you pay for an upgrade) is given back as plan credit, which is used only to pay for requests at your package's prices. Plan credit expires at the end of the billing period it was paid for and does not roll over. It has no cash value: it cannot be withdrawn, transferred or refunded, including when you downgrade or cancel. A refund for a failed request goes back to the plan credit or balance it was paid from.
- Only completed requests are charged. A request that fails because of a fault, or that returns no vehicle for the registration given, is refunded to your balance as described in the documentation.
- Service history searches. The service history fee is taken when the request is accepted. If the completed search finds no records, including for a vehicle outside the published manufacturer coverage, or the request fails because of a fault, the fee is refunded in full automatically. A search that returns records is charged at the endpoint price whether or not the records are as many or as detailed as you expected. A request is charged at the price in force when it is accepted.
- Balance top-ups are not refundable except where the law requires. Monthly packages renew until cancelled; changes take effect as described on the pricing page.
- Prices are in pounds sterling. We are not VAT registered, so no VAT is added and no VAT invoice is issued; if that changes we will give 30 days' notice. If you are outside the UK you are responsible for any tax due in your own country.
- We may change prices on 30 days' notice by email or on the pricing page.
11. Rate limits, fair use and the sandbox
- Each key carries per-second, per-minute and per-day limits, and each package has limits and per-endpoint daily caps across all of an account's live keys, shown on the pricing page, in the documentation and in response headers. We may reduce limits where usage threatens the service or our data suppliers' limits.
- Sandbox keys are free and return fixed test data that may be old or inaccurate. Sandbox Results are for development and testing only and must never be shown to End Users or used for any real decision.
12. Reseller and white-label use
You may incorporate Results into your own products, including branded vehicle history reports that you sell to your customers, without any further agreement with us, provided that you comply with these terms and the following conditions:
- Reports, not raw data. Results reach your customers inside a Report you produce for a specific End User and vehicle. You must not expose the API, a lookup service, a data feed or an exportable dataset (clause 5).
- Disclaimers. Every Report and every page that shows Results must state clearly that the information is drawn from UK registers and third-party sources at the time of the request, may be incomplete or out of date, is not a substitute for a physical inspection or professional advice, and must not be the sole basis for a decision to buy, sell, finance or insure a vehicle. MOT history must carry the Open Government Licence attribution (clause 7).
- Branding. You must not use any data supplier's name or mark, or suggest that we, a data supplier or a public body has endorsed your product. You may state that your Report uses data supplied through the DealerPricing API; you must not present yourself as the originator of the underlying registers.
- Your customers are yours. You are the trader for consumer-law purposes in every market you serve. You are responsible for your own terms, pricing, refunds, complaints and regulatory compliance, and we have no contract with your End Users.
- Coverage and charging. You must make your customers aware of any coverage limit we publish for an endpoint (for example the manufacturers covered by service history). You remain liable for our fees for every completed request we charge under clause 10; how you charge or refund your own customers is your decision and your responsibility.
- Data protection and territory. Clauses 8 and 9 apply to every market you serve. Where you or your customers are outside the UK, you are responsible for the lawful transfer and use of any personal data in the Results.
- No onward resellers. You may not appoint others to resell Results or Reports, or let another business call the API through your keys, without our written consent.
- Audit. On reasonable notice, and no more than once a year unless we reasonably suspect a breach, you will show us how Results are used and presented in Your Application and Reports.
Volume pricing, minimum commitments and any bespoke terms for larger resellers are available on request from support@dealerpricing.co.uk.
13. Changes to the API and availability
- We improve the API continually. We will give at least 30 days' notice by email of changes that remove or rename fields or endpoints; additions are not notified.
- The API is provided without an uptime commitment unless an Enterprise service-level agreement says otherwise. Data suppliers and public APIs are sometimes unavailable; requests that fail for that reason are not charged.
14. Suspension and termination
- You may close your account at any time. Any unused balance is handled under clause 10.
- We may suspend or terminate your access immediately if you breach these terms, if we reasonably suspect fraud, abuse or unlawful use, if your balance is exhausted or a payment fails, or where a data supplier withdraws or restricts our rights to the data you use. We may also terminate for convenience on 30 days' notice.
- On termination the licence ends, you must stop calling the API and delete cached Results (clause 6). Reports already delivered to your End Users may be kept. Clauses that by their nature should survive, including 6, 7, 8, 15 to 19, survive.
15. Intellectual property
The API, the documentation, our software and the selection, compilation and arrangement of Results are owned by us or our licensors and are protected by copyright, database right and other laws. Except for the licence in clause 4, no rights are granted to you. Underlying facts about a vehicle are not owned by us, but the Results as supplied are. You may give us feedback about the API and we may use it without obligation.
16. Warranties and disclaimers
We warrant that we have the right to grant the licence in clause 4. Otherwise the API and Results are provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent permitted by law we exclude all other warranties and conditions, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, currency, fitness for a particular purpose and uninterrupted operation.
17. Limitation of liability
- Nothing in these terms limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.
- Subject to that, we are not liable for loss of profit, revenue, business, contracts, goodwill or data, for the cost of substitute services, or for any indirect or consequential loss, however arising.
- Subject to that, our total liability to you in any 12-month period, in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise, is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim.
- We are not liable for the acts, omissions or data of any data supplier or public body, or for decisions you or your End Users take in reliance on Results.
18. Indemnity
You will indemnify us against all claims, losses, damages, costs and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from Your Application, your End Users, your Reports, your breach of these terms or of any law, any Reseller Use, and any claim that your use of Results infringes a third party's rights, except to the extent caused by our breach of these terms.
19. Confidentiality and publicity
Each of us will keep the other's non-public information confidential and use it only for the purposes of these terms. We may name you as a user of the API in our marketing unless you tell us not to; you must not use our name or marks without our written consent except to state accurately that Your Application uses the DealerPricing API.
20. General
- Changes to these terms. We may update these terms. We will give at least 30 days' notice by email of material changes; continuing to use the API after that date is acceptance. Changes needed to comply with law or a data supplier's requirements may take effect sooner.
- Notices go to the email address on your account and to support@dealerpricing.co.uk.
- Assignment. You may not transfer these terms or your account without our written consent. We may assign to a successor of our business.
- Entire agreement. These terms, the pricing page and the documentation are the whole agreement between us about the API and replace any prior understanding, unless we have signed a separate written agreement with you.
- Severance and waiver. If any clause is unenforceable the rest continues. A delay in enforcing a right is not a waiver.
- Third parties. Nobody other than you and us may enforce these terms.
- Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction.
